Innovation Challenge Submission Form

Congratulations to our 2 Data Design Diabetes Innovation Challenge Finalists. Following a one-month mentorship program and a $20k award, each of the 5 semi-finalists
shared their prototypes during Demo Day in NYC on September 15, 2011. Through public voting and the judges’ consideration, 2 Finalists have been selected to move on to
the final phase of the Challenge: testing their prototypes in a real community. The $100k Challenge winner will be chosen based on the results!

CHEWABLE
Social game highlighting impact of food choices
Chewable is a mobile gaming service that helps people with diabetes under-
stand the best food choices, and tracks their progress toward meeting healthy goals through food interactions.
“Chewable combines a great concept with great design and a great team. Their project is very promising for providing people with just enough actionable information when and where they need it to help guide them towards better decisions on what food to buy.” Ida Sim, UCSF
“Chewable integrates open data on food choices with a simple fun user design and community engagement that can change the way people with diabetes learn about food choices. We believe that this can lead to real life, sustainable improvements to diet – a critical success factor in a comprehensive diabetes management plan.” Dennis Urbaniak, sanofi-aventis
GINGER.IO
Mobile tool for automated self-monitoring
Ginger.io transforms a mobile phone into an automatic self-monitoring tool
for tracking real-time movement patterns and social interactions passively, without user input.
“Ginger.io transforms your friendly, unobtrusive mobile phone into your watchful health monitoring companion. I really responded to the ease of use, the way data is captured passively, and constancy of the team. This feels very real.”
Sue Siegel, MDV
“One of the main challenges with health apps is data entry: it's more work for the user! As a patient, I am excited to see how Ginger.io bypasses this barrier passively acquiring and analyzing data around our behavior to help us out.”
